Plum Ice-Cream

Hi peeps, hope you all are well.

The look on people’s faces when I tell them I am making, “Plum ice-cream” is absolutely hilarious & they confusedly ask me, “Plum…like real plums?”

At that moment I think to myself & want to reply, “No the fake ones they sell at the market!”  LOL, but I hold back with that statement, bwhahaha (evil laugh).

One of my speciality & favourite ice-cream recipes of all times is plum. Its got a mind blowing taste of sweet-sour flavours. As I love to make it for those special summer occasions, plus it feeds a huge crowd. Since the occasion this past weekend was a bbq dinner, the night before my cousin in law ties the knot. It really was the ideal dessert & received much praise. My better half is not really a fan of plums, but the minute he tasted it, he kept returning to indulge in (just) a few more servings & said to me, “Ooof this is so good!”  & his eldest niece Nihaal added, “It looks to good to eat!” YAY!

Plum Ice Cream

Ingredients:

5 medium blood plums

1 can evaporated milk

4 egg yolks

125gr castor sugar

125gr icing sugar

1 vanilla bean/1 tablespoon vanilla essense

300ml water

Method:

  1. De-pit the plums & cut into quarters, place them with the castor sugar & water in a pot & boil for 10 minutes.
  2. Cool down, puree the plums with the liquid in a blender & chill in the refrigerator.
  3. In a sauce pan add the evaporated milk, vanilla & icing sugar, bring it to a boil & cool down, add a little milk to the lightly beaten egg yolks & whisk quickly to prevent the eggs from scrambling.
  4. Add the egg yolks to the milk & cook on low heat whisking all the time until a thick custard like consistency is reach.
  5. Add the plum puree to the custard & cook a few minutes more until everything is mixed well & thickened.
  6. Cool down & freeze for 1 hour.
  7. Place the plum custard in the ice cream machine & churn it for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  8. Place in a mould & freeze over night before serving.

I serve plum ice-cream with a cream cheese sauce, it really compliments it each other well. The spill of creamy cheesy sweetness is a WOW to go with it! However you can use any sauce to your liking.
